Eat the Worm

Start every day by eating the worm.

No, not the worm at the bottom of a tequila bottle.  Unless you want to.  Then you should.

I mean, every morning as you get up ready to face another day as a frazzled leader in a fast growing company, eat the worm first.

Do the one thing you’d rather not do.  Get it off your plate so you can focus on adding value and leaving the drama behind.

Every day, I eat a different worm.  Sometimes it’s tough conversations with a teammate, client, or vendor. Other days I need to make a tough call on where to invest/divest to build my company.

I didn’t always eat the worm.  In fact, I used to avoid the worm entirely—life only seemed more pleasant then.  But over the past 4+ weeks, every day I’ve made the tough call, had the tough conversation or done something I’d rather not do (hello, Quickbooks!).

And guess what?  The company’s progress has probably tripled.  We’ve had breakthroughs, simplified our thinking and had more honest conversations, which build trust. And in the end, my energy is focused on strategy and the future rather than avoiding the worm altogether.

I’m not going to mislead you- eating the worm is as unappetizing as it sounds.  But just like spinach, in the end, it’s worth it.
